CAPE ELIZABETH LIGHTS - Maine
Location: Cape Elizabeth at Casco Bay Entrance
Currently Operational: Yes
Height: 129 feet
Year Established: 1828
Cape Elizabeth Light, established in 1828, stands at the south entrance to Portland Harbor. In 1874, the original rubblestone towers were dismantled and replaced by two cast-iron towers located 300 yards apart. The lighthouse was initially equipped with two separate towers, earning it the nickname "Two Lights". These twin towers provided a distinctive navigational aid, helping sailors to distinguish Cape Elizabeth from other coastal landmarks. The west tower was deactivated in 1924, but the East tower continues to serve as an active aid to navigation, operated by the United States Coast Guard.
