BURNT COAT HARBOR LIGHT - Maine
Location: Hockamock Head on Swans Island
Currently Operational: Yes
Height: 75 feet
Year Established: 1872
Open To Public: Yes
Burnt Coat Harbor Light was built in 1872 and is a classic example of a New England coastal lighthouse. The tower is a square brick structure 33 feet tall. The station originally had a second range light tower with a covered walkway connecting the two towers. After many complaints that the two lights were confusing, use of the second tower was discontinued in 1884, and eventually that tower and the covered walkway were removed. The light was automated by the Coast Guard in 1975, and in 1993 ownership of the property was transferred to the Town of Swan’s Island. A complete restoration of the property was undertaken in 2006. The keeper’s house and light tower are now open to the public during the summer months. And there is an apartment in the keeper’s house that is available for weekly rentals during the summer.
