The Baker Island Lighthouse was established in 1828. The original lighthouse was demolished and rebuilt in 1855. The current lighthouse was deactivated in 1955, and then reactivated and automated in 1957. It is currently solar powered and an active aid to navigation. The actual tower height is 43 feet, though the height of the focal plane is 105 feet.

Ownership of the light station was transferred from the US government to the Essex National Heritage Commission in August 2014. Essex Heritage, a non-profit organization, operates and maintains the lighthouse and its surrounding 10 acre property, with the mission of public access and preservation.
